Drop the running commentary

The narrator is not a fact.

"Man is disturbed not by things, but by the views he takes of them." — Epictetus

There's a voice narrating your whole day. "This is going badly." "They think you're a fraud." "This always happens to you."

We treat it like a news anchor reading facts. It's more like a nervous roommate with a microphone.

What if half of what it says just isn't true?

I've spent whole afternoons ruined by a story that never checked out.

The event was neutral. The commentary made it a crisis.

You can hear the narrator without believing the script.

This week, try noticing one story your mind tells — and asking if it's actually true.
