Don't Manufacture Drama

  Calm is leverage

Markets move.
 Tenants complain.
 Contractors miss deadlines.

That’s normal.

What if the real edge is emotional stability?

I’ve noticed drama often fills the gap where preparation should be.

When I prepare, I’m steady.
 When I react, I escalate.

Calm conversations solve more than loud ones.

This week, try responding one beat slower.

Pause.
 Then speak.

Don't adopt anxiety

Anxiety does not produce good work. Unfortunately, anxiety spreads like wildfire from one person to the next. The goal of an anxious person is to spread their anxiety to you. They feel validated and thus better by you also feeling anxious. Avoid this downward spiral. It's a trap. When someone else is spewing anxiety, remember to: Remain calm: freaking out makes things worse, not better. "Let's figure out how to take care of this.” Be empathetic: acknowledge the person's anxiety without adopting it. Repeat the concern back to the person, then say, "I can understand why this is a concern.” Be clear: do not overpromise or overreact. "We are going to look into this.” Things not to do in response to others’ anxiety:  -promise to do more work -promise you'll work all night to solve it  -promise to do anything other than look into it The most important thing is that the anxiety stops with you. Do not turn around and spread the anxiety to your team, family, etc....

Be grateful

Create a trigger in your life that builds your gratitude muscle. This could be: a 2-minute journal to end the day about what you are grateful for a sincere thank you a picture on your desk For MG , his trigger is this photo that hangs in his office. It's from a trip to Mali during their famine in 1984. Red Cross workers would measure children's arms. If too big, they did not receive the limited food ration b/c they could survive with no food. If too small, they did not receive the food ration b/c they would most likely die with or without the ration. Your arm had to be the "middle length" to get any of the rations. Be grateful for what you have. No matter the disappointment or supposed tribulation, do not whine or complain, do not get angry, do not last out atanotherperson to express your entitlement. You are not better than anyone else. Other people's (children's) terrible fate, undeserved and tragic, could have been your fate.
